Research
My investigations focus on 3 areas of research. I identified a highly specific chymase as the major angiotensin II-forming enzyme in the human heart. Over the last 20 years, I have studied its angiotensin II-dependent effects in experimental models of cardiovascular disease. Fourteen years ago, I co-pioneered the use of ancestral protein reconstruction (molecular paleontology). I have used this technique and site-directed mutagenesis to study the evolution of function in enzymes.
